Quick answer
The official Steam description confirms custom characters with their own appearances, loadouts and abilities. Use customization to make the operative readable and to define a job for the next mission; do not assume every visual choice changes combat or that a custom character can replace every named role. Exact creation options and unlock rules belong to the current client.
Separate identity from the combat job
Character creation answers “who do I want to control?” Squad planning answers “what must this operative do?” Keep those decisions separate:
- Choose the appearance or identity options the current client exposes.
- Read the operative’s current loadout and ability text.
- Assign one mission job, such as opening a position or protecting a teammate.
- Test the loadout in one mission context.
- Record whether the change affected the problem you intended to solve.
This prevents a cosmetic choice, a role label and a tactical conclusion from being treated as the same fact.
Build a readable first custom operative
For a first experiment, change one visible or functional element at a time. If the issue is survivability, preserve the rest of the squad and note whether the new ability changed the recovery option. If the issue is a blocked objective, choose a loadout whose displayed ability addresses that objective and record the follow-up.
The official listing also describes broader archetypes and squad synergies. Read Classes and Archetypes when the choice is about a role, and Combat Synergies when it is about an interaction between operatives.
What this page does not establish
The store page does not document every appearance option, whether a Jedi can be created, exact loadout slots, ability values, respec rules or unlock requirements. Search suggestions can reveal those questions, but they cannot answer them. Wait for current-client evidence before publishing a table or claiming that one custom setup is best.
Continue with squad planning
When the character choice is clear, continue with Squad Planning to place complementary jobs in the squad.
