Quick answer
Build the party around the problem the next encounter presents, then pause during real-time combat to read enemy traits and patterns before committing to skills or positioning. The official Steam description supports parties of up to four, equipment and skill choices, traits, and real-time tactical combat with pause. It does not support a permanent best-party ranking for every dungeon situation.
Prepare a four-member party
Use the pre-expedition screen to make each choice answerable:
- Pick a party size that gives the expedition enough coverage without sending an unprepared member.
- Review each member’s equipment, skills and traits together rather than choosing from one stat in isolation.
- Give the party a clear task for the next run: survive a difficult room, control a dangerous effect or reach a resource objective.
- Keep one change at a time when testing the party so the next return trip tells you what actually helped.
The current store description says members have abilities, talents and traits based on race, background and personality. That supports a deliberate selection process, but it does not establish a full trait ranking or a guaranteed synergy list.
Pause before committing to the encounter
When combat begins, use the pause window as a decision checkpoint:
- read the enemy traits and patterns visible in the current encounter;
- position the party before spending the most important skill;
- choose an effect that answers the immediate problem, such as stun, bleed, burn, provoke or a summon; and
- resume, observe the result and pause again when the situation changes.
The official listing names those effect categories and describes real-time combat with pause. The correct use depends on the encounter in front of you, so this page avoids turning one creator build or one early fight into a universal answer.
Review the result instead of copying a tier list
After an expedition, record one useful comparison:
- Which enemy pattern caused the failure or slow-down?
- Which member, equipment choice or skill addressed it?
- Did the party need more preparation, a different position or a different expedition objective?
Then change the smallest part of the party that answers that question. The store page supports sword, mace, bow and fire-magic examples, but it does not establish which one is strongest across every floor or enemy.
Common early mistakes
Choosing a party from labels alone
Member traits, equipment and skills work together. Start with the encounter task and use the current party screen to test the choice.
Spending every skill before reading the room
Pause-tactical combat rewards a readable sequence: inspect, position, commit and reassess. A fast opening action is not automatically the best answer.
Treating named effects as a complete combat manual
Stun, bleed, burn, provoke and summons are examples in the current official description. This page does not infer damage, duration, resistance or a fixed order from those names.
Frequently asked questions
Can a party contain four members? Yes. The official Steam description says players can build a four-member expedition party.
What is the point of pausing? It creates a checkpoint to inspect traits and patterns, position the party and choose the next skill deliberately during real-time combat.
What is the best party composition? There is no single composition established for every encounter in the current source. Build around the next problem, test one change and keep the result tied to the current Early Access build.
Continue with settlement preparation
If the party is failing because the camp cannot supply the next attempt, return to Settlement and Expedition.
